[M]y mom, Nellouise, is confidently balanced on the railing of the coast highway bridge over Gaviota Creek in about 1923. She is a descendent of Jose Francisco Ortega, the Spaniard who led Father Serra into California in 1769. Ortega settled here on Chumash Indian land. He died in 1798 at the Chumash village of Casil on the coast near where this picture was taken. My grandma, Nana, is holding Nell’s coattail. I love my roots, Gaviota connections and having my mom’s fun loving spirit and interest in the past; you should see her albums of old family photographs all neatly organized. She died a few years ago with that impish smile still on her face and in her heart. ¬†¬†reeve
